Firm News We are very pleased to announce that Steven Kahn has been selected for inclusion in the 2012 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Personal Injury Litigation. This is the second consecutive year that he has been included on this exclusive list. This is a very high honor, indeed, as the selections for inclusion are made by peer-review survey. Below is a quote from the Best Lawyers website regarding the nomination process: "Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based on peer review, as it has been for the past 28 years, and the voting pool for existing categories consists of all lawyers who are currently listed. These listed lawyers are asked to vote on both current listees and new nominees in their specialties and metros and/or states or provinces, as well as to nominate additional lawyers. Voting takes place either by phone or by electronic ballot. To read further on our nomination process and helpful tips, please click here. Each listed lawyer is asked "If you could not handle a case, who would you refer it to?" Lawyers are asked to give numeric grades (5-1) to the nominees: 5 for someone the voter would definitely refer a case to, 4 for someone the voter would probably refer a case to, 3 for someone the lawyer would be hesitant to refer a case to, etc... Voters are allowed to provide comments as well as grades and are asked to vote only on lawyers whose work they know personally. Votes that are clearly aberrational or politically motivated are ignored. Once selections have been finalized, they are checked against state bar sanction lists to make sure that each lawyer is in good standing with his or her state bar. Once this process is completed, announcements are sent to firms' marketing departments and letters of inclusion are then sent to the individual attorneys. Please click here for more information about our selection process. We continue to be dedicated to the unique needs of each of our clients' cases and we hope that you will tell others about your experience with us. We are pleased to announce that Garry Kahn has been awarded the Multnomah Bar Association’s 2010 Professionalism Award. This is the highest honor awarded by Multnomah Bar Association and is made each year to an attorney who exemplifies the standards in the MBA Professionalism Statement: “Professionalism goes beyond observance of the legal profession’s ethical rules and serves the best interests of clients and the public in general; it fosters respect and trust among lawyers and between lawyers and the public, promotes the efficient resolution of disputes and makes the practice of law more enjoyable and satisfying.” Click here to read an interview with Garry by MBA President, Leslie Kay. In August 2009, Steven Kahn obtained one of the largest non-economic damage verdicts in Clackamas County. Non-economic damages are damages for pain, suffering, inconvenience and interference with activities. They are not damages for medical bills and lost wages. Those are economic damages. Non-economic damages are subjective and difficult to obtain, especially in Clackamas County for a 50-yearold woman who had suffered neck and back strains in a motor vehicle collision, but received very little treatment. In fact, her total treatment amounted to fewer than 10 visits with a doctor and physical therapist over a period of nearly 2 years, with substantial gaps in treatment. Nonetheless, Steven was able to obtain a jury verdict for $25,000 against the Farmers insured who crashed into Steven’s client on an I-205 off-ramp. The trial lasted 2 days and included the testimony of the client’s treating physician and a physiatrist from Kaiser. Steven also presented the testimony of his client’s friend who trained and rode horses with his client. Because of her injuries, the client was no longer able to care for the horse she owned and rode. She ultimately sold her horse. Garry Kahn has been named by Super Lawyers magazine as one of the top attorneys in Oregon for four consecutive years (2009, 2008, 2007, 2006). Only five percent of the lawyers in the state are named by Super Lawyers. We are happy to announce that, for the second year running, Garry Kahn has been included in the Portland Monthly’s list of “Portland’s Best Lawyers” featured in the June 2008 edition. Only 19 personal injury litigators who represent injured people were honored as Best Lawyers. The honorees are lawyers nominated by clients and other lawyers, who were asked this question: “If you had a close friend or relative who needed a lawyer in your field, and you could not handle the case yourself, to whom would you refer them?” In 2007, Steven
Kahn tried a case on behalf of a 44 year-old woman who was hit
from behind while stopped at a light when the defendant rearended the car stopped
behind his client. His client suffered a cervical strain and sprain and treated
with two chiropractors regularly for seven months, and sporadically thereafter.
After two days of trial, which included the presentation of two very competent and credible chiropractors by Steven and the adverse testimony of the orthopedic surgeon hired by Farmers to review my client’s records and testify that she was not injured, Steven convinced the judge to grant a directed verdict in my client’s favor on the issue of causation (meaning that the judge decided that the collision caused the client’s injuries and that the only issue for the jury was the amount of her damages). The jury then awarded $25,000 in damages plus an additional $5000 for the client’s medical expenses. Steven
believes that the key to achieving this successful result for his client was
the credibility of his client and her treating chiropractors, as well as the
credibility of the overall case presentation. Kahn & Kahn believes our clients are best served by credible, professional, thorough and competent representation. If that is the kind of representation you desire, please call us for a free consultation. We are happy to announce that Garry Kahn was nominated for inclusion in the 2008 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Garry has received this honor for 10 years in a row. |
